Our History

Bethany Christian Academy started as an idea in 1979 when fifteen families, including Professor Timothy Gyuse and his wife, Elizabeth met to discuss the possibility of starting a private Christian boarding secondary school in Jos.

This idea was motivated by the continued falling standards in the academic, moral spiritual spheres in many private and public schools in Nigeria. The desire was to set up an Prof. & Prof. (Mrs.) Gyuse alternative to these falling standards for children of missionaries generally and those of the Great Commission Movement and their associates in particular. At the first meeting, the talk was centered on the inspection of possible sites. However, the idea fizzled out as the participants went their different ways.

In retrospect, the Great Commission Movement of Nigeria (GCMN) had a 16 acre piece of land in Barkin Ladi. This land which “This idea was motivated by the continued falling standards in the academic, moral spiritual spheres in many private and public schools in Nigeria’  had been acquired by the then National Director Rev. Yemi Ladipo,  was intended to be used to establish a Christian Conference centre, But this dream could not materialize for lack of funds.

In 1982, Professor Gyuse assumed office as the National Director of GCMN and inherited this parcel of land from his predecessor. By 1985, Professor Gyuse, through God’s leading, came up with the idea of using the acquired land to establish a combination of a Christian school and a conference centre. In this way, the dual purposes of having a school for children of GCMN staff and hosting conference for staff and their families would be achieved. And more so, as the population of GCMN staff kept growing overtime.

While the planning was still in progress, in 1991, there was the unique opportunity to increase the initial 16 acres to 58 acres at a modest cost. Following this development, a group of committed Christian businessmen and executives was constituted into a development committee to execute the plan of establishing Bethany Christian Academy. This committee was later reconstituted to become the first Board of Reference of the school. It was chaired by Mr. Minso Gadzama.

The first set of students of the school commenced on September 5, 1992. They were temporarily accommodated in the premises of the proprietor along Bauchi Ring Road in Jos. With the completion of some structures at the permanent site in Barkin Ladi, the school formally moved on September 8, 1995. This vision, thus, became a reality.

The school held its first graduation ceremony on July 1st, 1998. It was an occasion filled with tears of joy and reminiscences of God’s sustaining grace and the fulfillment of an idea that started as a dream.

The year 2002 marked the tenth anniversary of Bethany Christian Academy. The celebration to commemorate the anniversary was absolutely superb. However, amidst the joys of shared hugs, laughter, feasting and general jubilation, the question on many minds was “which way forward”. Today (2010) Bethany Christian Academy is eighteen years old and she is still marching on to keep alive the idea that started as a mere dream.
